Political Economies of School Exclusion and their Consequences (Excluded Lives)
Our project delves into the complex issue of school exclusion, which has significant short and long-term consequences on academic achievement, well-being, and mental health. School exclusion rates vary widely across the UK, with England experiencing a rapid rise while numbers remain low in other nations. We're conducting the first home, and international comparisons, of historical and current policies, practices, and legal frameworks related to school exclusion.
Through a multi-disciplinary approach involving experts from criminology, economics, education, law, psychiatry, sociology, and disability studies, we aim to understand the social origins and consequences of exclusion. Our research also explores the experiences of families, pupils, and professionals involved in the exclusion process. By highlighting disparities and challenges, we seek to inform policies that promote fairer outcomes for all pupils, regardless of background, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive education system.
