The OSCAR Study: Optimising Structured Medication Reviews
OSCAR aims to optimise Structured Medication Reviews (SMRs) in England.
SMRs are in-depth assessments by healthcare professionals, like pharmacists, to ensure patients with multiple long-term conditions or on various medications are receiving safe and effective treatment.
The purpose of SMRs is to reduce medicine-related harm, particularly for vulnerable groups like people living with frailty or those in care homes. While they seem sensible, little is known about how they are conducted and what they achieve.
This research will generate new knowledge about how SMRs are conducted and experienced by pharmacists and patients, and what happens as a consequence of these reviews. We will feedback our findings to primary care networks to help improve equity, quality, and effectiveness.
